Nexus 7 Teardown: Harder to Repair Than Kindle Fire, Easier Than iPad

The expert hardware hackers at iFixit are at it again, this time with Google’s and Asus’ new Nexus 7 tablet in hand. Less than a week after Google announced its flagship 7-inch tablet at Google I/O, the iFixit team disassembled the device. And what they found is a tablet that’s a breeze to open up and repair, but not quite as easy as Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
With the help of retaining clips along the edge of the tablet, the Nexus 7 pops open with ease. It is much more repair-friendly than Apple’s iPad, which is a glued-together device. And according to the iFixit folk, it only took the Nexus 7 one extra millimeter of thickness to make it significantly easier to repair.
“That’s the negligible difference between extending the life of your device through repair, as opposed to tossing it in a landfill,” iFixit wrote in its teardown. “And most of all, nobody will complain about that one millimeter difference in day-to-day use, but the user-serviceability it brings will make all the difference when the device breaks.”
Inside, the tablet features a large 4,326 mAh, 16 Wh battery held in place by a small amount of adhesive. And again, unlike the iPad, the battery is easy to take out and replace, when needed. You won’t need to solder or screw anything in when your battery gets fried and you need put in new one.

The Nexus 7 also features an L-shaped motherboard with standard Phillips #00 screws for its interior fasteners. It doesn’t require any special tools to take the tablet apart — just a Philips #00 screwdriver and a spudger does the trick.
The iFixit team found 1 GB of Hynix H5TC2G83CFR DDR3 RAM, the same model found in the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, on the motherboard. Other components include the tablet’s Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, an AzureWave AW-NH665 wireless module, Kingston KE44B-26BN/8GB 8GB flash, and more.
Overall, the Nexus 7 is an easy-to-repair device. You’ll be able to replace components, like the I/O cable, without having to replace the motherboard. And as mentioned it’s “like butter” to pop open the rear case, and battery replacement is simple.
Up to this point, the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 are on equal playing field. The real kicker between the two is the display. The Kindle Fire’s glass and display materials are not fused together, making the cost of repairing a shattered display much lower. The Nexus 7, on the other hand, features an LCD that is fused to the tablet’s Corning glass. If you drop your tablet and break the glass, you’ll have to replace both the glass and the LCD in order to fix it.

Beyond that, the only drawback is that the thin copper alloy sheets that shield the Nexus 7′s display could tear. The iFixit team gave the Nexus 7 a 7 out of 10 repairability rating, compared to the 8 out of 10 for the Kindle fire and the 2 out of 10 for the iPad.

Nokia Accuses Google’s Nexus 7 of Patent Infringement


Google and its partners are knee deep in patent disputes. And this time, instead of a certain Cupertino company, it’s Nokia on the offensive. Less than a week after Google unveiled its new Nexus 7 tablet, Nokia has made claims that the Nexus 7 infringes on some of its patents.
The news came only days after Apple won not one, but two injunctions against Samsung Android devices. Both the Galaxy 10.1 tablet and the Galaxy Nexus, Google’s flagship smartphone, may face U.S. sales bans.
The Nexus 7, however, won’t necessarily face injunction. Nokia has yet to file any suits against Google or Asus, the OEM responsible for manufacturing the Nexus 7. Nokia is much more likely to request that Google and Asus pay the appropriate licensing fees than bring either one to court.
“Nokia has more than 40 licensees, mainly for its standards essential patent portfolio, including most of the mobile device manufacturers,” a Nokia spokesperson told Wired in an e-mail. “Neither Google nor Asus is licensed under our patent portfolio. Companies who are not yet licensed under our standard essential patents should simply approach us and sign up for a license.”
It’s unclear, however, which of Nokia’s patents the Nexus 7 infringes. The Inquirer reports that it could have to do with patents regarding IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi standard. The Nexus 7 comes in a Wi-Fi only model, without cellular data options.
Google and Asus did not respond with comment by the time of publication.
Considering the financial hurdles Nokia currently faces, it makes sense for the company to leverage its 30,000-strong patent portfolio. This could be the beginning of Nokia’s patent mining efforts, as it waits for Windows Phone to pay off.

Google Glass Team: ‘Wearable Computing Will Be the Norm’


Even though I followed Google’s I/O Conference from across the country, the event made it obvious that a company created with a strict focus on search has become an omnivorous factory of tech products both hard and soft. Google now regards its developers conference as a launch pad for a shotgun spread of announcements, almost like a CES springing from a single company. (Whatever happened to “more wood behind fewer arrows”?)
But the Google product that threatened to steal the entire show probably won’t be sold to the public until 2014. This is the prosthetic eye-based display computer called Project Glass, which is coming out of the company’s experimental unit, Google[x]. Announced last April, it was dropped into the conference in dramatic fashion: An extravagant demo hosted by Google co-founder Sergey Brin involved skydivers, stunt cyclists, and a death-defying Google+ hangout. It quickly attained legendary status.
Even before people got to sample Glass, it was popping their eyes out.
Google wouldn’t provide a date or product details for Glass’ eventual appearance as a consumer product — and in fact made it clear that the team was still figuring out the key details of what that product would be. But Google made waves by announcing that it would take orders for a $1,500 “explorer’s version,” sold only to I/O attendees and shipped sometime early next year. Hungry to get their hands on what seemed to be groundbreaking new technology, developers lined up to put their money down.
Meanwhile, I just as hungrily bit at the opportunity to do a phone interview with two of the leaders of Glass. Google originally hired project head Babak Parviz from the University of Washington, where he was the McMorrow Innovation Associate Professor, specializing in the interface between biology and technology. (One relevant piece of work: a paper called “Augmented Reality in a Contact Lens.”)
The other Glass honcho, product manager Steve Lee, is a longtime Google product manager, specializing in location and mapping areas. Here is the edited conversation.
TrifectaTech: Where are you now with Glass as compared to what Google will eventually release?
Babak Parviz: Project Glass is something that Steve and I have worked on together for a bit more than two years now. It has gone through lots of prototypes and fortunately we’ve arrived at something that sort of works right now. It still is a prototype, but we can do more experimentation with it. We’re excited about this. This could be a radically new technology that really enables people to do things that otherwise they couldn’t do. There are two broad areas that we’re looking at. One is to enable people to communicate with images in new ways, and in a better way. The second is very rapid access to information.
TrifectaTech: Let’s talk about some of the product basics. For instance, I’m still not clear whether Glass is something that works with the phone in your pocket, or a stand-alone product.
Parviz: Right now it doesn’t have a cell radio, it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you’re outdoors or on the go, at least for the immediate future, if you would like to have data connection, you would need a phone.
Steve Lee: Eventually it’ll be a stand-alone product in its own right.
TrifectaTech: What are the other current basics?
Parviz: We have a pretty powerful processor and a lot of memory in the device. There’s quite a bit of storage on board, so you can store images and video on board, or you can just live stream it out. We have a see-through display, so it shows images and video if you like, and it’s all self-contained. It has a camera that can collect photographs or video. It has a touchpad so it can interact with the system, and it has gyroscope, accelerometers, and compasses for making the system aware in terms of location and direction. It has microphones for collecting sound, it has a small speaker for getting sound back to the person who’s wearing it, and it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. And GPS.
This is the configuration that most likely will ship to the developers, but it’s not 100 percent sure that this is the configuration that will we ship to the broader consumer market.
TrifectaTech: How much does it weigh?
Lee: It’s comparable to a pair of sunglasses. You can stack three of these up and balance a scale with a smart phone.

TrifectaTech: What was your thinking when you embarked on the project, and how did that thinking evolve?
Parviz: We did look at many, many different possibilities early on. One of the things that we looked at was very immersive AR [Augmented Reality] environments — how much that would allow people to do, how much could come between you and the physical world, and how much that can be distractive. Over time we really found that particular picture less and less compelling. As we used the device ourselves, what became more compelling to use was a type of technology that doesn’t come between you and the physical world. So you do what you normally do but when you want to access it, it’s immediately relevant — it can help you do something, it would help you connect to other people with images or video, or it would help you get a snippet of information very quickly. So we decided that having the technology out of the way is much, much more compelling than immersive AR, at least at this time.
TrifectaTech: So in other words, you’re moving away from “Minority Report” into doing something that’s more organic to everyday life.
Lee: That’s correct. You see that in the video released when we announced the project in April. That kind of information, we still think is super-compelling, but in a form that’s available when you want it, and it’s generally out of the way and it doesn’t clutter your entire field of view.
TrifectaTech: How do people issue commands to the system — like when to begin a video stream?
Parviz: On the side of the device there’s a two-dimensional touchpad. We have a button that we typically use for taking pictures. There are microphones in the system, so I you could have sound input to the system. We’ve experimented with that and we’ve experimented with gyroscopes and accelerometers and compasses with different types of gesture input. Now, how this is going turn into a consumer product, we’re still experimenting. It’s not entirely finalized yet.
Lee: We’re also experimenting with a time-lapse feature, which takes a photo every 10 seconds. It’s the perfect example of getting technology out of your way. We believe it’ll be easier to initiate one of these live hangouts than placing a phone call today. The power of being able to share your view with other people is pretty incredible. Not just in extraordinary situations like the parachuting demo, but everyday situations like sharing moments with remote family members, or just having a richer experience in shopping where you could get feedback or advice from a spouse or partner or friend.

TrifectaTech: You both have been testing this extensively in your lives — what have you discovered?
Parviz: Two things, actually. One was about how I can communicate with the people I care about through images, so I can capture moments that otherwise I wouldn’t capture. I communicate actually a lot more with those people through images and they get the first-person point of view. The other involved search. In one of our prototypes — I don’t know if this will be on the consumer product or not — we had search available with an audio input, so you could touch the device and say something, and get the response back. So literally I could touch the device and ask, “What’s the capital of China?” and the response would just appear in front of my eye. It’s a magical moment. You suddenly feel you’re a lot more knowledgeable.
Now, wearing it day in day out, I have to say that this device is very experimental. It crashes a lot of times, and a lot of the features don’t work. There’s quite a bit of work that we have to do to make this a seamless, enjoyable thing for regular people to wear. But as someone who developed the technology, I’ve been pretty happy with it.
Lee: I’m an avid cyclist, and several weeks ago I rode in a grueling six-hour ride around San Francisco. Obviously it’s been a design goal for a long time to make Glass lightweight and comfortable, but it really surprised me how comfortable and unobtrusive and out of the way it really is. It didn’t become a problem or annoy me.
So then what value did I get out of wearing it? I could enjoy my ride, talk with my friends, meet new people, and didn’t have to think about technology the whole race. Yet at the end [using the aforementioned time-lapse photo capture feature] I had over 1,000 images, some of which were spectacular, just really precious moments. That gave me the ability to create a very short video. No one wants to watch a six-hour video, but my friends and family enjoyed watching the 20 or 30 second video that summarized my experience.
TrifectaTech: How long did it take you to go through those images? It would be pretty grim if we spent half our lives gathering information and the other half curating it.
Lee: You raise a really good point. If a device like Glass is successful, it’s definitely going to generate a lot more content, and so tools to manage that are incredibly important.
TrifectaTech: Maybe this could be a good use for the huge machine-learning neural net that Google announced this week — maybe you could use the Google Brain to go through your six hours and find the most interesting parts.
Lee: Yeah, agreed, but simple approaches can help a lot, like discarding blurry photos and detecting the photos that have people’s faces, or landscapes. Just by doing those basic things you can quickly reduce 1,000 photos down to 20 or 30.
TrifectaTech: On that bike ride, did you get any kind of data on the thing as you were riding? Did it help give you directions or alert to stuff that was happening or things like that?
Lee: Let me use a different example. I often commute from Google in Mountain View to my home in San Francisco, and I was supposed to meet up with a friend when I arrived. While I was riding, he text-messaged me, and I saw that he was going to be late. I saw that on the display, and that was it. If I didn’t have Glass, I would’ve felt the vibration of the phone in my jersey pocket and pulling it out would have been awkward and unsafe. It really made a difference.

TrifectaTech: Some people who have interacted with Glass testers feel that sometimes people seem to temporarily drop out of a conversation to process something they see on the display. How does Glass avoid being something that removes us from our physical environment?
Parviz: We’re actually very cognizant of that. One of our definite goals is not to have something that constantly distracts people — something where every three seconds you get an email and you have to look away, and can never engage in a real conversation. We’re going be very, very selective in how this may interrupt you.
Lee: We really do view this through the lens of how to improve people’s lives in society, and not how can we geek out with the most technology possible. But it’s definitely true that something like this could go either way. A poor design could absolutely distract you and isolate you as a person. Good design actually keeps you more engaged in your activities in life whether it’s a lunch with someone or riding your bike or whatever activity you do.
Parviz: We want people to be engaged with the physical world. We want to untether them from the desktops and laptops. You want to have something where don’t feel like you’re wearing technology. Where your eyes are pretty much open to the environment, your ears are open, your hands are free — but you can engage with the technology if you need to.
TrifectaTech: It also seems to me that at a certain point you realized that there’s something qualitatively different about a photo that’s taken with your hands free.
Lee: That’s true. We’ve long thought the camera’s important, but since we’ve started using this in public and with our family and friends and in real situations, not just hidden in the Google lab, that we’ve truly seen the power of being hands free. We make sharing really easy, and we have a Google+ circle for our team, and so various team members were out in their real lives with their families, with their friends, in different situations, and were posting photos. It actually really brought our team closer together, because we got to understand our team’s personal lives better, and I think it was through those photos that we saw many aha moments. We shared the one with Sebastian [Thrun, a head of the Google[x] division] where he’s playing with his son. That photo symbolizes the kind of images and moments that we’ve been able to capture.
TrifectaTech: Let’s talk about the launch process– why the two stages?
Parviz: We’re hoping actually to create a developer community to help us evolve this technology together. In 2013, we’ll ship the developer version, to this community, and hopefully, in less than a year following that, we’ll have the consumer version out to the public. That’s our hope at the moment. We’re trying really hard to get this out the door.
TrifectaTech: Why did you pick that $1,500 price point for developers?
Parviz: We try to have a reasonable cost that would be accessible to developers, but our target is to have the consumer version significantly cheaper than that.
Lee: But at the same time, we view this as a premium product.
TrifectaTech: So consumers won’t be paying $1,500, but it’s not like buying a pair of sunglasses.
Lee: It’s not going be $49.99. It’s up to us to deliver the value of a premium product and also communicate that to people.
TrifectaTech: Since this device sits next to your brain, are there any concerns about radiation?
Parviz: We’ve looked at it very thoroughly throughout the project, and at the moment, the radiation is significantly less than a cell phone. When you use a cell phone, you have to communicate with a tower that’s quite far from the device, but when you use this system, you communicate only with short-range radio. We measured the radiation on the device and it’s way below any threshold set by standards.
TrifectaTech: Do you think this kind of technology will eventually be as common as smart phones are now?
Lee: Yes. It’s my expectation that in three to five years it will actually look unusual and awkward when we view someone holding an object in their hand and looking down at it. Wearable computing will become the norm.

Google unveils Nexus 7 tablet, available mid-July for $199


Google has officially announced the Nexus 7 tablet during its opening keynote at Google I/O 2012. As rumored, the device is manufactured in partnership with Asus, featuring a 7-inch 1280 x 800 display and a Tegra 3 SoC which itself comprises a quad-core CPU and twelve-core GPU. The device weighs in a mere 340 grams so it’s easy to carry around and will reportedly last for 9 hours of HD video playback.
Connectivity-wise you’ll get the mandatory Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but there was no mention of 3G/4G. You also get a front-facing camera for video conferencing and all the sensors you'd expect from a modern tablet.
The device will ship with the recently-announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and is being pitched as the ideal tablet for music, movies, books, magazines, apps, and games. Google highlighted a few of these things on stage, including the new Google Play magazine app featuring tablet-optimized articles with interactive elements, as well as playing a short clip from TV series Parks and Recreation.


There’s a new home screen that puts your content front and center — much like the Kindle Fire does — and new widgets to help you find books, apps, games, songs and more in the Google Play store.
Also highlighted were Google’s Chrome browser for Android, a completely redesigned YouTube app for tablets, the latest version of Google Maps with new overlays showing relevant information about places, a “Compass Mode” that lets you see inside-the-business photos, and support for offline maps.
Lastly, Google gave a glimpse at the tablet’s gaming capabilities with a couple of titles before announcing the all-important price and availability: the Nexus 7 will begin shipping in mid-July and will sell for $199.
At that price Amazon is going to have a hard time competing with its Kindle Fire — at least for now, since an update to the Kindle is rumored for the end of July. Google is certainly hoping to steal some sales from the iPad as well but given Android’s track record in the tablet market we’ll have to wait and see how that goes. One positive aspect is that since this is a Nexus device Google shouldn’t drag its feet when it comes to updates.

Can Google Outshine Apple And Microsoft at Google I/O 2012?


Google will have its chance to show up Apple and Microsoft in the coming days when the search giant is expected to debut the next version of the Android mobile operating system and new Nexus-branded devices. Google's big show will happen during Google I/O, the company's annual developer conference, which includes keynote sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. The Google conference follows a flurry of announcements from Apple and Microsoft during the month of June.
Apple doubled down on new Macs and an iOS refresh, while Microsoft in two separate events debuted the next-generation version of Windows Phone and a new Windows 8 tablet, Surface. Now, it's Google's turn to convince users to stick with Android mobile devices and stay away from the lure of a revamped iOS and Windows Phone.
Nobody knows for sure what Google has planned, but here's a rundown of the highlights expected and wished for during Google I/O 2012.
Android 4.1/5.0 Jelly Bean
Google is expected to take the wraps off the latest version of Android at Google I/O, but rumors have not been particularly rampant about what features Jelly bean might include. Some speculation suggests Google may be getting ready to release its own voice-activated digital assistant codenamed Majel. The project is named after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and a longtime Star Trek actor best known as the voice of the computer in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Majel would be similar to Apple's Siri.
Beyond going where no Android has gone before, a recent leak for an upcoming Nexus tablet suggests that Google may cut the carriers and manufacturers out of future device updates, according to Gizmodo Australia. So instead of waiting for Samsung or HTC to upgrade your Galaxy Nexus or One X to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) or the expected Jelly Bean refresh, Google could send the update directly to you. There's no telling what that might do to your carrier specific overlay such as Samsung's TouchWiz or HTC's Sense, but if the report is accurate that's good news for Android fans hoping to stay on the bleeding edge of update cycles.
There is also some speculation that Chrome will become the default browser in Jelly Bean, following Google's release of the first Chrome Beta for Android in February.
One reason the rumor mill may not be buzzing all that much about the next version of Android is that Jelly Bean could be a minor update from Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. In fact, there are signs that Jelly Bean will be called Android 4.1 and not Android 5.0, which would suggest a more significant refresh.
A user on the xda-developers forum as well as the blog Droid Life spotted a mention on Google Play that the Galaxy Nexus would be the first phone running Android 4.1, Jelly Bean.
Nexus Fest
The Wall Street Journal in May reported that Google will launch Jelly Bean with new Nexus devices including smartphones and tablets from as many as five manufacturers. The Nexus line is the flagship brand Google uses to launch new hardware with every new version of Android.
There have been a lot of reports claiming that a new 7-inch Nexus tablet is on its way from Asus and Google. The device would cost around $250 or less, have a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processsor, and Android 4.1, Jelly Bean.
Gizmodo Australia recently obtained what it claims is a training document that describes the new 7-inch tablet. The purported device would have 1280-by-800 resolution, include 8GB or 16GB storage, 1.3 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor (the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201 also uses a 1.3GHz Tegra 3), GeForce 12-core GPU, and 1GB RAM. Gizmodo's leaked device would also include near field communication for Google Wallet.
It's not clear how many Nexus devices (if any) Google would present during Google I/O. In 2011, Google introduced Ice Cream Sandwich during the developer conference, but didn't follow up with the first Android 4.0 device until October.
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt in December said the company was working on a tablet.
Google Cloud
Google is all about offering online-centric services, and during Google I/O the company may introduce a new cloud computing platform to compete with Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), according to GigaOm. This announcement would be more interesting to developers since we're talking about the ability to rent virtual servers to run server-side apps.
But a Google-branded EC2-type service could help support new and interesting online businesses. EC2, for example, is used or has been used by many services you rely on every day including Dropbox, Instagram, Netflix, Quora, and Reddit. If Google does get into the virtual server game, let's hope they don't have a catastrophic outage as Amazon did in 2011.
Project Glass
Some critics are hoping for a sneak peek at Project Glass also known as Google Glass, the search giant's augmented reality glasses. But the Google co-founder Sergey Bring recently said Project Glass wouldn't hit store shelves until at least 2013.
It could be an interesting Google I/O this week, but will the search giant debut enough interesting new things to compete with iOS 6, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, a new Retina Display Mac from Apple, and Windows Phone 8 and the Windows 8-based Surface from Microsoft? Only a few days until we know for sure.

The Google Android Tablet: Coming Soon?


Google Android TabletWatch out, iPad: Google may be getting into the tablet game. In a move reminiscent of its recent step into mobile phone design, Google is reportedly working on its own custom Android-powered tablet.
Most of the specifics are still unknown -- what features a Google tablet would include, for example, or who would manufacture it -- but if there's one thing we can count on, it's with whom a Google-made tablet would compete.

Google Android Tablet: What We Know

The Google Android tablet news comes by way of a story published in The New York Times on Sunday. The story, a piece about upcoming competition to Apple's iPad, states that Google is currently "exploring the idea" of creating its own tablet computing device. The gadget is described as "an e-reader that would function like a computer."
Google AndroidThe info, according to The Times, comes straight from the big dog's mouth: Google CEO Eric Schmidt is said to have divulged the Google tablet scoop while chatting with friends at a recent party in L.A. Other insiders supposedly confirmed the concept.
"People with direct knowledge of the project -- who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device -- said the company had been experimenting in 'stealth mode' with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet," The Times reports.

Envisioning a Google Android Tablet

Knowing the principles of the Android operating system, one can make a few educated guesses about what a Google Android tablet could be and how it might compare to Apple's iPad. First and foremost, it'd likely be a far more open device in terms of customization: While Apple tends tomaintain a tight grip on its user experience, Android-based devices typically allow users to configure the interface to their likings and replace stock components as they choose.
Google Android AppsThe same principle applies to applications: Compared to Apple's highly controlled approach to app development and approval, Google's Android Market for apps allows anyone to submit and publish programs without scrutiny. Android-powered devices -- with the exception of those that run on AT&T -- also let users download apps from unofficial third-party sources. One would imagine these qualities would be among the basic tenets of a Google-made Android tablet.
Along those same lines, a Google Android tablet would likely provide support for Flash -- something Apple has long forbidden on its mobile computing devices. The existence of an open app marketplace could also mean immediate support for tethering, as we've seen happen via third-party utilities on Android phones. And, of course, any Android tablet would presumably provide feature-rich apps for Google services such as Gmail and Google Voice, something Apple also does not permit.
As for the device's form, Google has previously published conceptual images of how a Google-centric tablet might look. Those concepts, however, revolved around the idea of a Chrome OS-based tablet, so they may or may not apply to an Android-based design.

Google Android Tablet: A Reality Check

It's fun to imagine what a Google Android tablet could do, but don't let some of the headlines out there fool you: From what we know so far, there's no reason to believe a Google-made Android tablet is an "imminent" or even a certain thing.
Read back over what the info provided byThe New York Times actually states: Google is "exploring the idea" of building a tablet device. It is "experimenting" with possibilities. Despite some bloggers' tendencies to fill in the blanks with big words, there's no indication that this is a done deal, let alone something that's likely to occur at any moment.
We do know, however, that a slew of new tablets is on the way for 2010, and many of them are expected to be powered by Android. So whether or not Google ends up building its own tablet, numerous new options will soon be headed our way. The iPad may have been the first serious contender, but it won't be the only one for long.
